How did you like Sugar Bowl? It's such a long drive from South Lake Tahoe that I've never made the trip there.
Shouldn't you be working on those 150 unread e-mails?

Yes except Squaw has a night session. Mostly park features and the mountain run.I think 7 PM midweek -- 9 weekends

Thanks.
I liked how Sugar Bowl was set up. Especially the fact that all the lifts are high speed. Plenty of variety for all levels. Somewhat shorter runs than the Alpine and Squaw. But that's a plus for those of us still trying to learn how to actually ski steeps, as opposed to making turns in spurts. They got as much snow as Squaw and Alpine Meadows during the latest storm. The place felt more friendly.
Going down Silver Belt was a hoot. That's where they have an annual race that started back in the 1940's.

The lifts closed around 4:00, sometimes earlier or later if you had to ride a few lifts to get back to a base lodge. But usually we were pretty well done in terms of energy by 3:30 or so. Very different when the runs are so long and/or challenging.
The Cable Car, Bailey's Beach and Belmont are the Squaw lifts open until 7pm, but only if conditions are reasonable. No night skiing when dumping snow like it did this week.

We took it easy and checked out Northstar today. 2-for-1 coupons from Shell stations (10 gal gas) made the decision that much easier. I wanted to see Northstar as a potential place to vacation with Marz Jr. I enjoyed skiing there about 15 years ago. Plus several of the Divas were going there too.
Northstar only got 5-6 inches from the snowstorm that left 20+ inches at Sugar Bowl, Squaw, and Alpine Meadows. Apparently that's typical. Most storms don't go over the crest. A little colder today. So packed powder all over in spite of some sun in the morning.
Northstar grooms almost all the runs. But lots of glades to play in on Mt. Lookout and on the Backside. The Divas who are intermediates had a great time. Several did black runs for the first time, including ones that were ungroomed but short enough to look feasible.
Didn't stop for many pics. Wanted to keep my hands warm.
On Mt. Lookout - no lines, footrests on lift
Trees more spaced and less steep on the Backside

Blue bird day at Mt. Rose!
Well worth taking the red-eye home to get in one more day of skiing. Relatively cold, in the 20's, so some runs were pretty hard all day. The base at Mt. Rose is over 8000 ft. Summit close to 10,000 ft. We were breathing harder than on any other day even thought the skiing was easier.
Early morning at Main Lodge, had to wait for the Rentals to open at 8am, only took 30 minutes from Tahoe City since road was clear
Locals know the Slide side opens early and stays relatively empty, softens up sooner than the Mt. Rose side so good to hit first
Slide Lodge is new, good food served on real plates
Groomed bowl below Zephyr Express, this is steeper than it looks
Couple more of the blue runs on Slide side, no greens over here
Soft bumps on Washoe Zephyr
View of Lake Tahoe
Mt Rose from Reno airport, 30 min drive on clear roads

The addition of the Chutes to Mt. Rose means experts have plenty to keep them busy. Here are views from the Express lift.

If you are thinking of a trip to north Tahoe, here are assorted notes based on my trip planning and experience. I knew the dates back in Oct, so set things up relatively early.
Lots of VRBO options. These days some owners are willing to bargain. For instance, by giving a free night or not charging the cleaning fee. I found a 2BR/1.5BA 2-floor condo, sleeps 2-4, in Tahoe City that included a full kitchen in a complex with a hot tub and sauna for about $1100 for 7 nights. Can be a bit less in Truckee.
If you stay in south Tahoe, note that the road at Emerald Bay has been closed a lot due to flooding. It was never open the entire week I was there. That means driving to a north Tahoe ski area can take over an hour. Personally, I think if you want to ski north Tahoe then it makes more sense to stay in Truckee, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, or Incline Village. From Tahoe City, it was 15-20 min to Homewood, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, or Northstar. Sugar Bowl was 45 min via Donner Pass Road.
We rented a small AWD SUV. I got it for $220 from Expedia with pick up at the Reno airport. Taxes and fees added on another $100. Given that it snowed heavily two of the days we were there, it was good to have AWD. They cleared the main roads quickly, but there was still snow/ice around. The side roads or the roads up to the ski areas were snow covered longer, even down at lake level.
It's possible to use the local bus system to get to the slopes. Just need to do some planning. TART buses start running pretty early in the morning and are scheduled once an hour. You can make first chair taking the bus. Homewood, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley have shuttles that pick up at a number of motels. Homewood will arrange for pick up and it's free! Just call a day ahead.

We had good meals at Rosie's Cafe and Evergreen Restaurant in Tahoe City. Rosie's is right across from Tahoe Dave's. That's where we got our skis. Decided I wanted to demo when I would be able to be on longer runs and varied conditions.
Several ways to get discounted lift tickets. We stopped at the REI near the Reno airport since we knew where we were going to ski. For Northstar, 10 gallons of gas at a Shell station in CA gets you a 2-1 coupon. There is one in Truckee on CA89 just off I-80. Diamond Head has a cheap ticket if you show a relevant boarding pass. If you buy tickets for Mt. Rose online, you don't have to print ahead of time. Just bring the confirmation number. Saves $13 off the window price.

Not too hard to figure out the ski areas, except for Squaw Valley. There it's worth asking some questions before you head up the mountain. Especially if you only plan to ski there one day and visibility is limited. At Alpine Meadows, Scott chair is the easy way to get over to Lakeview (groomed blues) or Sherwood Express. Don't take the Hot Wheels chair unless you like 15-min rides. Roundtop Express or Summit Express are great for the frontside.
There is a cable channel (12) that broadcasts from south Tahoe. RSN gives weather reports and snow status for selected area, mostly Heavenly and Kirkwood, starting at 6:30am. But sometimes the weather is a day behind until after 7am.
Sugar Bowl and Northstar offer free 2-hour lessons. Several people in our group did one at Sugar Bowl. They thought it was worthwhile. Northstar has very different weather than the west side areas. The day Alpine, Squaw, and Sugar Bowl got 15-25 inches, Northstar got 5-6 inches.
If you have extra time in Reno, there are several outlets there. For instance, the Patagonia outlet is off I-80 on the way to Truckee. If you are planning to ski at Mt. Rose on a Friday and can get to Bobo's ski shop beforehand, you can sign up for demo skis. They bring the skis to the Slide side of Mt. Rose, so you can check out several skis on the same day.

always wanted to go to Tahoe and ski Kirkwood, Squaw, and either Mt.Rose or Alpine Meadows.
